The goal of this project was to make a promotional book and exhibit maquette for a chair displayed by Design Within Reach. I was assigned Eero Saarinen's #71 chair, and my approach was to showcase the chair's elegant yet dynamic structure. Since it is mostly used in corporate spaces, I decided to keep layouts simple and structured, with some moments of playfulness. Here are some of my initial sketches.
I wanted the book to resemble the chair. Initially my sketches were a slightly too on the nose, so I decided to approach my vision with more subtlety; since the most recognizable characteristic about this Saarinen chair was the whole in the back, I made a die-cut on the front cover to both resemble the number 71, and to give viewers a peek into the book.
The final result is a simple yet effective design that preserves its informative nature, while keeping audience engaged. The exhibition acts as a reflection of the book; the front view calls back to Saarinen's signature arches and the interior design kept graceful and lively.
